Pregnant Mother's Flu Shots Protects Baby Untill Six Months Of Age

Baltimore, MD (AHN) - A new study has found that flu shots for pregnant women can help protect babies from the flu until six months of age.

There is currently no flu vaccine for babies under six-months-old, but babies in that age group are more likely to be hospitalized for the virus than any other age group.

While public health officials recommended the immunization for pregnant women for years, few mothers actually receive them, particularly in developing Asian countries.

Researchers from Baltimore's Johns Hopkins University carried out the study by administering flu shots to 340 pregnant women in Bangladesh. There was a 63 percent reduction in flu among babies whose mothers were given a flu shot and prevented about one in three respiratory illnesses in them and their mothers, according to the report in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Snacking Healthy

clipped from www.sparkpeople.com
While some dieters happily accept when someone suggests a snack, others feel pangs of guilt when a nibble is merely suggested. However, there is nothing inherently wrong with a bite between meals. In fact, snacking might be the missing ingredient that will help you reach your weight loss goals.
There is definitely a wrong way and a right way to snack. You should avoid sugary items like candy and soda, and shouldn’t be consuming enough calories to constitute a meal.
Fruits and vegetables are always a safe bet because they are low in fat and calories. (Just be sure to avoid high-calorie dips.)
Many experts are recommending several smaller meals throughout the day instead of the usual three.
Mindless eating is often the downfall of many snackers. You may start with only a handful of your favorite crackers, only to finish the entire box, without even thinking about it. Obviously, this example isn’t the healthy snacking that can help you reach your weight loss goals.
